PRAYERS
From The
Book of Common Prayer of the Episcopal Church (Church Publishing Co.)
In the Morning
This is another day, O Lord. I
know not what it will bring forth, but make me ready, Lord, for whatever it may
be. If I am to stand up, help me to
stand bravely. If I am to sit still, help me to sit quietly. If I am to lie low,
help me to do it patiently. And if
I am to do nothing, let me do it gallantly.
Make these words more than words, and give me the Spirit of Christ. Amen.
Before an Operation
Almighty God our heavenly Father, graciously comfort your servant _____
in his/her suffering, and bless the
means made use of for his/her cure.
Fill his/her heart with confidence
that, though at times he/she may be
afraid, he/she yet may trust in you
completely; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
For a Sick Child
Heavenly Father, watch with us over your child _____, and grant that she/he
may be restored to that perfect health which it is yours alone to give; through
Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
For Trust in God
O God, the source of all health: So fill our hearts with faith in your
love, that with calm expectancy we, may make room for your power to possess us,
and gracefully accept your healing; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
For those suffering from addiction
Blessed Lord, you ministered to all who came to you:
Look with compassion upon all who through addiction have lost their
health and freedom. Restore to them the assurance of your unfailing mercy;
remove from them the fears that beset them; strengthen them in the work of their
recovery; and to those who care for them, give patient understanding and
persevering love. Amen.
For a person near Death
Almighty God, look upon your servant ______ lying in great weakness, and
comfort him/her with the promise of
life everlasting, given in the resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
For those who have Died
Creator of all, we pray to you for those we love, but see no longer,
especially _____: Grant them your peace; let light perpetual shine upon them;
and, in your loving wisdom and almighty power, work in them the good purpose of
your perfect will; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
For Young Persons
God our Father, you see your children growing up in an unsteady and
confusing world: Show them that your ways give more life than the ways of the
world, and that following you is better than chasing after selfish goals. Help
them to take failure, not as a measure of their worth, but as a chance for a new
start. Give them strength to hold their faith in you, and to keep
alive their joy in your creation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
For those we Love
Almighty God, we entrust all who are dear to us to your never failing
care and love, for this life and the life to come, knowing that you are doing
for them better things than we can desire or pray for; through Jesus Christ our
Lord. Amen.
For the Answering of Prayer
Almighty God, who has promised to hear the petitions of those who ask in
your Son’s Name: We beseech you to incline your ear to us who have now made
our prayers and supplications unto you; and grant that those things which we
have faithfully asked according to your will, may effectually be obtained, to
the relief of our necessity, and to the setting forth of your glory; through
Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
For Travelers
O God, whose glory fills the whole creation, and whose presence we find
wherever we go: Preserve those who travel [in
particular _____________]; surround them with your loving care; protect them
from every danger; and bring them in safety to their journey’s end; through
Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
A Prayer of Self Dedication
Almighty and eternal God, so draw our hearts to you, so guide our minds,
so fill our imaginations, so control our wills, that we may be wholly yours,
utterly dedicated unto you; and then use us, we pray, as you will, and always to
your glory and the welfare of your people; through our Lord and Savior Jesus
Christ. Amen.
Grace at Meals
Give us grateful hearts, O God, for all your mercies, and make us mindful
of the needs of others; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
or this
Bless, O Lord, thy gifts to our use and us to thy service; for Christ’s sake.
Amen.
or this
Blessed are you, O Lord God, King of the Universe, for you give us food
to sustain our lives and make our hearts glad; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
or this
For these and all divine mercies, God’s holy Name be blessed and
praised; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
In the Evening
O Lord, support us all the day long, until the shadows lengthen, and the
evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over, and
our work is done. Then in your
mercy, grant us a safe lodging, and a holy rest, and peace at the last. Amen.
